Rather than using cartridges, the PSP is one of the only handhelds to use optical media for the task. UMDs weren’t just for games, as Sony released many movies and even a few TV shows on the format to be viewed on the handheld, most famously Spider-Man 2. The PlayStation 2 Memory Card holds 8 MB of storage, eight times more than the original’s, and abandoned the blocks system so that saves could be whatever size they needed to. It could also store PS1 saves on it if copied over (which Suikoden III took advantage of), although PS1 games would not be able to detect them. Interestingly, the disc in Astro’s Playroom has a blue back, which was used for PS2 games that were small enough to fit on a CD-ROM, the format used by the original PlayStation. The platform design is rarely all that inspired though and we’re still very disappointed that all the enemies are direct rip-offs of Mario enemies, even relatively obscure ones like Pokey and Wiggler.

This references the Castlevania series, specifically 1997’s Symphony of the Night on PS1, by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo. Nearby the Horizon easter egg is an island with a bot making a blocky T. The game is about making assets and even entire games from scratch. At the start of GPU Jungle, check along the left-hand side between two trees for a lower section with four Bots with various weapons on their backs huddled around a campfire.

Jump onto the platform with the Coin, then jump up to the Wires and tug them to reveal yet more platforms. Other players view this game as a culmination of the PlayStation legacy after Astro’s Playroom featured almost every console generation, accessories, characters, and iconic locations. There are environmental puzzles that must be solved by pulling certain wires to open new platforms to jump on to make the ascent much more convenient. What this means is that if you, say, reach a Checkpoint with 10 Coins, then pick up 5 more Coins, then die, you’ll respawn at the Checkpoint back at 10 Coins, and need to collect the other 5 Coins again.

The Network Adapter allowed the PlayStation 2 to connect online for multiplayer, sliding into the Expansion Bay. It also had space for a hard drive, which was required for some games, while others could use them for optional DLC or game installation to reduce load times, much like the PS3 would do. The last official servers, for Final Fantasy XI, were shut down on March 31st 2016. The PS One LCD monitor was an attachment that allowed the console to be played without using a full-sized television.

It would then be updated six times over the years with new games and revised menus; the logo is from the 1996 version. Next to the PocketStation described above are two cylinders containing the sacred symbols in the form of clouds. This likely references PlayStation’s cloud functionality, which serves as the backbone of the PlayStation Now service that launched in 2014. Cloud servers are also available as an option to back up game saves for PS+ members. The “Wild Arms” Trophy, awarded for Spinning while firing the Gatling Gun in Deep Dataspace level of SSD Speedway, is a reference to 1996’s Wild ARMs on the PS1, developed by Media Vision. Wild ARMs is a Japanese role-playing game, and received a remake on the PS2 in 2003.

The first level of the game opens with Astro barreling down a waterslide before splashing in some water and walking up onto a beach. n188 to put into words, but the thunk of landing in the water is a dull, flat sensation that feels, well, like landing in water. Similarly, there’s a grainy effect when you walk across the beach, as if you could feel the sand. The vibrations even alternate between the left and right sides of the controller as Astro walks, so you sense each footstep. One family , “the Labo level is great for little ones to get the hang of mastering 3D movement. There are no enemies or places to fall but still some things to interact with and so platforming too”.

These reference Doko Demo Issyo, released for the device in 1999 only in Japan, and developed by Sony Interactive Entertainment. It’s most famous for starring Toro Inoue, also known as the Sony Cat, who wishes to become human. At the end of the short side-path to the Multi-Tap, you’ll spot a Bot with a flashlight stalked by a Bot in a straw hat. This references 2003’s Siren on PS3, developed by SCE Japan Studio.

This is a reference to 2002’s Monster Hunter on PS2, developed by Capcom. The use of PSPs however refers to an expanded 2006 PSP port, Monster Hunter Freedom, which was even more popular than the original. After the third and final use of the Hang Glider, on the right you’ll find a Bot in a slingshot, which you can Punch to send flying into some boxes. This references the 2007 game PAIN on PlayStation 3, developed by Idol Minds.

If done successfully, the Gran Turismo Special Bot and the “Grand Tourist” trophy will unlock. At the top of the steps, turn around, and come back on yourself so you’re walking across the white beams at the edges. Before you do that, stand on the edge just to the left of where you need to pull the chest from the ground. Doing so reveals the riddle for this area, which is a rather cryptic space outfit. A PS5 is hard to come by, and it’s hard to get new games that make the most of its power. In the hope of tackling both problems, we begin to assemble the list of the best new games available on PlayStation 5.

The game’s 16 levels feature nasty little bots to defeat, and little secrets and character cameos to find, such as the Buster Sword from Final Fantasy 7 or Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima. Levels have Astro jumping on fluffy clouds in Memory Meadows, skating along the ice in Cooling Springs, or blowing up asteroids in a later level in SSD Speedway. Need to get back to it for the special bots, downloaded it the other day but just haven’t got around to it. (LeMans and other duties) @BrettAwesome It’s been updated, hasn’t it. It seems the special bots are integrated into the guide as opposed to being tacked on as an addendum.

He also enjoys RPGs when he has the time to dedicate to them, and is a bit of a gacha whale. Astro’s Playroom has six main worlds, each divided into four levels, although there are exceptions. For the first part of our Astro’s Playroom guide, we’re going to provide a full walkthrough for each stage, which will help you easily 100% each location. Astro’s Playroom is a free platforming game, included as a pack-in with the PS5. It’s inspired by the characters and concepts first introduced in The Playroom and The Playroom VR, which culminated in the full-blown Astro Bot Rescue Mission for PlayStation VR.

On another table in the Labo area is a purple dragon surrounded by red Gems. This is a reference to 1998’s Spyro the Dragon on PS1, developed by Insomniac Games. Spyro’s wings notably use the inaccurate anatomy present in the original game; later titles gave it correct bat anatomy. Horizon has a second reference with the “Ready for the Proving” Trophy, awarded for shooting a Spitter’s shot with the bow and arrow in Raytrace Ruins. Um Jammer Lammy gets a second reference in the “It’s All in the Mind” Trophy, awarded for beating three enemies quickly with Punches. This is a reference to Chop Chop Master Onion, who gives Lammy this piece of advice early in the game.

Astro’s Playroom isn’t just a tech demo but a fun little platformer. It’s great that Sony is investing more in the Astro Bot franchise because this could be their answer to the Super Mario series. The level design is more like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World, and that’s a huge compliment.

Following Astro’s Playroom (2020), it is the fifth overall installment in the Astro Bot series and marks Team Asobi’s first game developed since its separation from Japan Studio. Finally, as much as I adore Astro’s cute nature and attention to detail with its celebration of PlayStation nostalgia, I would have loved a more considered narrative on top of all that. There was once a time when pack-in bundled games were regarded as the very best games available for that new console. You bought a Super Nintendo to play Super Mario World because it came in the box.
