It’s the type of game that you’re likely to return to as well, simply because of its feel-good nature. To play Astro Bot is to love Astro Bot, it’s as simple as that. Astro Bot is a 3D adventure platformer that features the PlayStation mascot, Astro, as he travels to different worlds in search of his lost crew members and to repair the PS5 mothership. It features numerous collectible items, from puzzle pieces to accessories for the other Astro Bots and even secret levels to discover and complete. The game also features numerous designs of Astro inspired by several IPs that have been on PlayStation over the years.
I’ve only spent an hour with it, so far, but I can already say there’s a good chance this will be my GotY. I was smiling like an idiot the entire time and loving every second of it and its charm. For £60 I want a game I can invest time in to enjoy for at least 2 weeks with a script and story that I will sit and ponder and go “wow” like the original horizon zero dawn or the last of us and remember for years. I could go on and on about every unique level, but the wonder of Astro Bot lies in discovery itself. It needs to be said that there’s a real emphasis on Astro Bot in not being punishing; there’s absolutely no penalty for losing a life, and the moment you grab a collectible, it’s yours — even if you respawn, you already have it.
This focus also affected the platformer’s story, as the game has fewer than 13 minutes of cutscenes. Astro Bot’s best moments take inspiration from some of PlayStation’s biggest games while adding a unique twist. Astro Bot packs a ton of variety into its level design, both visually and mechanically.
But that’s not the only way Astro Bot celebrates history, as that idea is also directly tied to the game’s collectibles. In every level, there are a number of bots to rescue and puzzle pieces to find. Puzzle pieces help reveal new features in your base at the crash site, like costumes. Saving bots brings them to your base, but having more bots also lets you solve puzzles around the crash site. But what’s really interesting is that roughly 160 of the game’s 300 bots are themed on past PlayStation games, wearing adorable little costumes. At your base, you can also use coins in a vending machine to unlock items for these themed bots, giving them little motifs that you can interact with.
Games nominated in the Family category rarely win Game of the Year; the only other time it’s happened was when It Takes Two took the top prize in 2021. The Game Awards voting jury generally prefers games aimed at an adult audience, with more “mature” themes and presentation. The jury also favors games with strong narrative elements, which Astro Bot just doesn’t have. There’s a sentimental and emotive appeal to adults inherent in both games — more so than in, say, Super Mario Bros. Wonder — and this might have helped Astro Bot strike a deeper chord in the voting jury’s hearts. This is because while Astro Bot is that celebration of PlayStation’s history, it’s also a visual graveyard of IP that will never again see the light of day, making their appearance absolutely sting.
